Description:

Trip Description:

Metal Dome is a summit in the Brandywine area, south of Whistler. This is a beautiful and somewhat popular snowshoeing adventure with very limited exposure to avalanche terrain. The idea is to leave Vancouver fairly early (7am max) as daylight is in short supply at this time of the year and wandering the mountains in the dark/cold is a recipe for disaster, and come back the same day. The hike itself isn't overly technical (last short section before the summit is steep) so this is a great trip even for someone who's not too experienced with snowshoeing. This being said, total length is about 15km with 1,200m of vertical gain so this is by no means a walk in the park.

Requirements:

Ideally this is for people who've snowshoed before (at least a couple of times), but anyone who's a good hiker (no issue with 25k days and 1,500m of vertical gain) should not feel uncomfortable here.

Gear:

-Obviously appropriate clothing for winter travel

-Winter boots

-Snowshoes (can be borrowed from the club, or bought used form the marketplace for a decent price usually)

-Snow gaiters (can be borrowed from the club/not mandatory since this is a day trip, but highly recommended to keep the feet dry)

I am not against people bringing skis, but in order to do that, I will need a co-leader that skies and at least 2 people interested in skiing (nobody should ever be alone on this trip).

Logistics:

I do not have a car but plan on renting one for that weekend if nobody has one. This means higher cost than usual as we will be sharing the cost of the rental (shouldn't exceed $30/person incl. gas). If nobody else can drive, then the max number of participant will be 5 instead of 8 as advertised. If more than 2 cars are available we could go up to 12 people maybe as long as there's at least one other participant who's experienced with winter travel and willing to lead if necessary.

NOTES:

-This is a day trip / The exact dates will be weather dependant to ensure both the safety and enjoyment of the group. If the weekend of November 2nd offers safe conditions, we will pick the best of those 2 days. If not, it will be rescheduled to the next possible weekend.

-Winter backcountry travel is inherently risky even on the easiest trails and I am not a certified guide. Please be aware of your own skills and capabilities before signing up! (there's nothing wrong with just getting started with hiking, but if this your case, this is not a trip for you)
