Description:
Come on out to an ACC Social / Slideshow at the VanDusen Botanical Gardens (in the Floral Hall) on Oct 22 at 18:30 and get to hear about some rad adventures in the Coast Mountains from an old VOCer (John Baldwin) and UBC grad. This event will be like our weekly / bi-weekly slideshows but on a larger scale and sadly not include the classic orange VOC clubroom couch (however the event is free (!) & they provide snacks (!!)). John Baldwin has been epic-ing (totally a real word) in the BC Coastal Mountain Range for over 40 years, done many first ascents, written guidebooks for the area, is a photographer (check out one of his more famous photos below) and the list goes on.
I was doing some background research on John Baldwin and came across a small book about his life and adventures called 'A Life in the Wild' written by Chic Scott. The whole story is pretty epic with Ch. 2 (pg. 7) being about his start into mountaineering through the VOC! A free pdf of the 48 page story is available here>>> chrome-extension://efaidnbmnnnibpcajpcglclefindmkaj/https://alpineclubofcanada.ca/wp-content/uploads/2024/05/SS25-%E2%80%93-John-Baldwin.pdf
An exerpt from the book about a trip with the VOC up Mt. Currie (a 2,591m mountain with a prominence of 346m just outside of Pemberton): "We got up high and were running out of time, but still we went on to the top [of Mt. Currie]. Then we decided to take a short cut down, but it wasn’t a short cut at all so we spent the night out, huddled under a bunch of slide alder.” --- Sounds like true type 2 fun VOC style.

Blurb from the ACC about the event:
"John will talk about summer alpine traverses in the Coast Mountains. He will start by sharing some images from recent trips in the Chilcotin to the Potato Range, Niut Range and Rainbow Range. John is currently working on a guidebook to Coast Mountain High Routes that will describe 45 high routes and include everything from shorter traverses near Vancouver to the long alpine treks on the Coastal Divides above the inlets that John pioneered with John Clarke. The talk will finish with an overview of the book."
