Description:

The VOC is partnering with Canada West Mountain School (CWMS) to offer discounted and exclusive AST-1 Plus courses for VOC members! Members get a lovely discount of approximately 25% off (Cost: $275 + GST). AST, or Avalanche Safety Training, is an essential course to safely partake in many backcountry winter activities we enjoy in the club, such as ski touring and snowshoeing. AST-1 is required for many winter VOC trips, including for some trips that travel above our huts, which are situated near avalanche terrain. In the course, you will learn a wide variety of skills, ranging from decision-making and routefinding to snowpack analysis and practical rescue skills. More information can be found on the CMWS website.

The course will be split into three sessions:

  • Thursday: 2 hr Zoom theory session (6-8 pm)
  • Saturday: Day at Mt Seymour (no lift pass required)
  • Sunday: Day at Whistler/Blackcomb  (if you don't have a season's pass, CWMS will be able to source you a day backcountry pass for a cost)

Signup and payment for this course happens on the CWMS website, the link to this specific course can be found on the signup page for this posting. We encourage the use of the VOC signup tool, so that yourself and others can see who else is planning to take the course on this particular weekend, and to facilitate car faff, but you must signup and pay through the Canada West Mountain School website in order to attend. You are responsible for transportation for all sessions. You can use the message board link provided to find rides, or send an email to other participants.

*Note that if you cannot make the dates for any of the scheduled VOC AST-1 courses, you are eligible for a discount of 20% on all regularly scheduled Canada West Mountain School AST-1 courses and 10% on AST-2 courses. Email or call Canada West and tell them you are a VOC member if you are interested in this option.

A big thanks to Canada West Mountain School for partnering with us for another year and making outdoor recreation safer for our members! Hope to see you all out there ✌️🫶
