Start: Saturday, Oct. 26th, 8:30 am
Pre-trip meeting: Wednesday, Oct. 23rd, 5:00 pm
Pre-trip meeting location: Clubroom and Zoom
Description:
One of the most incredible things about BC is the giant trees. We have some of the largest trees in the world. On this trip we will see trees that are three metres in diameter and ~700 years old.
Our destination is Kennedy Falls [AllTrails]. As we hike ~12 km with ~600 m elevation gain over ~7 hours, we'll visit three huge Western Red Cedars and also check out the waterfall. The trail is mostly well-flagged but a bit technical with lots of tree roots and mud. This trip is beginner friendly, but you should have decent general fitness.
Let's meet at the "Community Bulletin Board" [Google Maps] at 8:30 am. If you're going from UBC, you can take the #14 and #210 busses and you'll need to leave The Nest at 6:30 am. If you can drive, add that when you sign up, and we may be able to arrange carpooling for some people at the pre-trip meeting.
Article: "Vancouver was once home to the biggest trees in the world." [Medium]
This trip will be exactly the same as the version I ran last year and we will see exactly the same trees. A photo from last year:
Pre-trip Meeting
The pre-trip meeting will be Wednesday, November 23 at 5:00 pm in person and on Zoom. You can either come in person to the VOC Clubroom or join remotely through Zoom. The Zoom link is at the top of the signup page. If you want to come on the trip but can't make the pre-trip meeting, send me an email before the meeting.
Weather Forecast
It will likely be rainy. That's OK, forest hiking is fun in the rain.
Forecasts: [MeteoBlue] [Environment Canada]
What to Bring
- waterproof hiking shoes with good traction (can be borrowed from the VOC during gear hours for $40 cash deposit, but selection may be limited)
- headlamp or flashlight (not your phone)
- waterproof jacket
- non-cotton shirt
- non-cotton sweater / fleece / warm layer
- non-cotton hiking socks
- non-cotton shorts or pants
- rain pants (optional but recommended if the forecast includes heavy rain)
- at least 2L of water
- lunch and snacks
- comfortable hiking backpack to put everything in (can be borrowed from the VOC during gear hours for $40 cash deposit)
- battery pack to charge your phone (optional but recommended)
Why bring a headlamp?
It is absolutely essential to bring a light source other than your phone. Getting caught out at night is always a possibility in the backcountry—you can be slowed down by injured group members, route-finding trouble, etc. Phones quickly run out of battery in backcountry conditions and you want to conserve power for mapping and calls. Headlamps are much more convenient than flashlights. They're a good investment if you plan to hike again in the future.
If you buy a headlamp, make sure you get one that's waterproof. You might also consider brightness (how many lumens) and how long the battery will last. A headlamp can be purchased many places, for example, Amazon, MEC, VPO, Canadian Tire, or Facebook Marketplace.
