Description:

Backcountry skiing is one of my all-time favorite activities - the fun of wandering in the mountains in the winter and very occasionally an enjoyable bit of skiing... It is not the easiest sport to get into though, considering the cost of gear and avalanche safety training, not to mention the difficulty of the sport itself. My hope with this trip is to get some backcountry beginners on one of their first tours.

Who is this trip for?

While this is a beginner backcountry skiing trip, It is not for beginner skiers. I’m happy to help people become familiar with skinning, breaking trail, kick turns, all the while exposing experienced skiers to ungroomed backcountry runs. I’m not capable of teaching anyone how to downhill ski, especially not in a backcountry environment. Because of this, I’m requiring that everyone coming has resort skied for at least two seasons.

I won’t be requiring that all participants have Avalanche Safety Training (AST1). The area is mostly simple terrain. However,  I’m considering requiring participants to take a look at Coast Mountain BC’s Avy Savvy course, which is a good idea anyway if you plan on getting into touring.

Additionally, I’m looking for at least one person who has a solid amount of backcountry experience to join as well and help out – comfortable making terrain decisions, answering questions, and being one of the more experienced people in a group.

What’s the plan?

Two options:

1.) drive up Friday evening from Vancouver and car camp at the trailhead. Then on Saturday morning we’ll go for a day trip around Mount Rohr before heading back to Van on Saturday evening.

2.) Head up Saturday morning and do an overnight trip around Rohr, getting back to Van on Sunday evening.

What we end up doing will depend on: participant’s previous experience, what everyone is hoping to get out of the trip, weather, availability. We can figure this out at the pre-trip.

Some things to note:

This trip is very dependent on weather, any backcountry skiing trip is. If avalanche conditions or weather are not looking good, this trip may be moved, rescheduled, or canceled.

Also, I am not a certified guide just a stoked backcountry skier. You are responsible for your own decisions in the backcountry.
