Description:

Ring in the New Year at the VOC's Phelix Hut while skiing endless pow. Skiers and snowshoers with AST1 can spend the days exploring above the hut and shredding the gnar. Snowshoers without AST1 can explore around the lake, build igloos, etc. Everyone can come together in the evening to share mulled wine and merry tunes. Bonus points if you can play the guitar! Both snowshoers and skiers are equally welcome. The exact dates of the trip are flexible and everyone is free to self-organize what days they want to leave/return on depending on their schedule.

The approach to the hut is partially along a logging road before following a steep trail through the forest. It is 9.9km and 1090m of elevation gain up to the hut, so some baseline fitness is required. The trail is often icy so sharp edges, ski crampons, and/or microspikes are handy.

More info about the hut can be found here: https://huts.ubc-voc.com/Phelix/

*Note that the vibes of this are not to get ludicrously drunk. Drunk skiing in the backcountry is also not the vibe and is super dangerous.

Pre-reqs:

  • AST-1 (or equivalent) if you plan to ski/snowshoe above the hut
  • Some backcountry camping experience

Gear Needed:

  • Hawaiian shirt for the 31st
  • Warm sleeping bag
  • Sleeping pad
  • Touring skis or snowshoes
  • Beacon, shovel, probe
  • Ski boots or snow boots
  • Winter jacket, pants, mitts, toque

*Disclaimer: We are not certified guides, we take no responsibility for your safety. Everyone is responsible for their own decisions. We are just skiers who want to spread the stoke at new year's.
