Start: Wednesday, Nov. 13th
Pre-trip meeting: Friday, Nov. 8th, 6:00 pm
Pre-trip meeting location: Clubroom

Description:

For some, the climbing season ends when the rock gets wet. Luckily, ice tools and crampons are indifferent to a bit of seepage.

Daughter of Drytool is an introductory drytooling trip. It is your chance to put picks on rock and scratch your way up some climbs. We will cover some basic techniques and safety considerations, then get some mileage on toprope.

IMPORTANT: The pre-trip is happening on Friday the 8th since the trip is happening within a week. If you can't make it, sign up on committed and I will message you if there are still spots available.

THE PLAN:

We will drive out to a drytool crag near Squamish and spend the better part of the day toproping. Bring food and water; a thermos is also recommended to suffer less. Ideally we would make it back to Vancouver in time for the slideshow.

This trip happens rain or shine; if a few people bring tarps to help set out shelters from the rain, the trip will be more pleasant. If you sign up as committed, you are signing up to go regardless of the weather.

PARTICIPANT REQUIREMENTS:

  • You must have Rock 1 level skills and outdoor climbing experience. As long as you have top-roped outdoors, that’s good enough for this trip. If you’re not a confident belayer, please do not sign up; the focus on this trip will be to teach drytooling skills, and not basic belay skills.
  • For purposes of this trip, you must be able to consistently climb (e.g. can usually onsight) at least 5.10a. This isn’t strictly necessary to drytool in general, but you will enjoy it a lot more if you have the requisite strength; like ice climbing, drytooling is rather physically intense & pumpy.
  • A willingness to suffer outdoors in the rain all day. For safety reasons, this means you should have hardshell layers available to you; I don't want to deal with someone getting hypothermia.

GEAR:

  • Crampons (w/ vertical front points)
  • Mountaineering boots
  • Ice tools
  • Harness
  • Belay device and a locking biner
  • Helmet
  • Waterproof layers (jacket + pants)
  • Warm layers for hanging around
  • Gloves (ideally waterproof; rubber dishwashing gloves work well for this)
  • Eye protection is recommended (e.g. safety glasses)
  • [very optional] A tarp + things to rig the tarp
  • [very optional] anchor material
  • [very optional] rope

You can rent some (but not all) of this gear from the club.
