Description:
The weather looks decent on Thursday so there's some catch-up to do after so much mediocre weather! Elk Mountain is a popular hiking/snowshoeing near Chiliwack, most of the trail is in the forest but the summit does offer some very good views of the very aesthetic Cheam range nearby. There is close to no exposure to avy terrain which is what I'm looking for here.
The trail:
The trail is about 10km with 1,000m of vertical gain, there will likely be snow for at least half of the way. Previous snowshoeing experience isn't required but some hiking experience is needed here as it won't really be a walk in the park (you have to be comfortable with elevation gain and being in the cold for a long time). If time and conditions allow it, we can push further to reach Mt Thurston as the ridge connecting the two peaks offers more good views, and remain simple avalanche terrain (very mellow), it would add up to 3 hours to the hike.
Feel free to join me if you're free that day and keen on going out! We'll leave the city around 6.30am and probably won't be back until the evening.
Gear List:
Mandatory: Snowshoes, Snow/Winter boots, Gloves+Hat, warm layers (no cotton) for top and bottom, insulated jacket, ideally a hardshell (for wind and in case of rain), headlamp (a phone IS NOT a headlamp), water (1L to 2L), Lunch and or snacks (cold weather drains the energy faster), good vibes.
Recommended: microspikes, snow gaiters (your feet will likely get wet without them), trekking poles with snow baskets.
