Description:
Hi all, if you’re also super tired of sitting on your computer, and need a break in h middle of finals, let’s go cross country ski at Callaghan Valley!!!
A ski rental package is 32$, day passes for students are 10$.
I’m not a skate skier (ie won’t be super fast), but I hope to have a decently long day of classic skiing. You are welcome on this trip if you’ve been on any form of skis before, but we might want to discuss the best way to do groupings in email faff.
I might change the exact date or add an extra day depending on how my studies go, I'll have this finalized by Sunday December 8th.
This won’t be an instructional trip, although you are welcome to use this trip posting to get a ride and take a class (we can drop you off at Whistler Olympic Park right next to Callaghan), or just try yourself (cross country skiing isn’t very hard, and I will likely run a more beginner friendly trip next term). However, if most of the interest is folks who are keen on going at a more relaxed trip I'm happy o do that as well.
If we don't get driver's, I hope to take the shuttle up to Cypress, and do some XC skiing there.
No AST pre-requisite, as the trails are groomed, this is relatively low risk.
If you’re new to skiing the three major types of skiing are:
-
Alpine/downhill - Classic resort skiing, take lift up, ski down, the skis are shorter and heavier, your heel is locked in. Can’t use club skis for this. It's really fun if you like zooming down.
-
Nordic/cross country skiing- the trails are groomed, your heel is free, the skis are light, you go up and down hill. We don’t have cross country skis, but you can rent them at the resort (there’s also two types skating and classic). It’s cheaper than downhill :) Probably the safest of all three, but least amount of going steep down. Great for enjoying your time in the forest.
-
Backcountry skiing/ski touring- you are not on a groomed track. If you are on AT skis/touring skis: your heel can be both free and released. If you are on tele skis your heel is always free. You go up and down. You must be aware of avalanche terrain. The club has skis! Great for enjoying forest and mountains, but still able to go zoom downhill.
The Callaghan cross country ski area is on the unceded territories of the Skwxwú7mesh (Squamish) Nation and the LilÌ“wat7úl (Lil’wat) Nation.
