Description:
This is the 6th annual steep lines trip, conceived of and previously run by Rob Shilton and Alex Barth. The idea of this trip is to be type 1 fun skiing steep lines in (stable) powder, if conditions allow. The planned location will be somewhere around Pemberton, likely either Phelix or Steep Creek. Both have their share of bowls, couloirs, tree skiing, as well as a comfy place to spend the night. As the focus of this trip is advanced skiing in the backcountry, it is definitely not beginner-friendly. You should have strong downhill and uphill skiing skills, ample experience, and avalanche knowledge. I will be strictly enforcing these requirements, as we want everything to go smoothly so we can get as many laps in as possible.
That being said, if you have the experience this will be an absolute blast! It is my hope that this trip can be a help to advanced skiers who have recently moved to the area (or exchange students!) who are trying to find skilled partners to tour with. Of course, longtime VOCers are also welcome! The group size will be limited to 2 vehicles to keep logistics easy and avoid a VOC hut party (fun, but not the purpose of this trip, especially if we end up at a non-VOC hut). We will leave Friday afternoon/evening, and hopefully arrive not too terribly late, then enjoy 2 full days of skiing before returning on Sunday.
Continuing the spirit that Rob has created for the trip, there will be a strict policy that you must be willing to have fun. It is also important that everyone feels welcome and respected on this trip, so check your attitude at the door. Hopefully by March winter will have returned and we will be treated to bottomless pow!
Here's a quick disclaimer that I’m not a guide, and while I hope we will be making decisions as a group, everyone is ultimately responsible for themselves. I’m also not the sendiest skier out there, but I am pretty familiar with the area. If the conditions aren’t safe, we won’t be pushing it, there is plenty of fantastic but mellow tree sking to be had.
