Description:
It’s that time of year again, the dreaded shoulder season, when all but the most determined of skiers have put away their sticks, yet most hikes are still covered in snow. The perfect time for a bike tour, I say!
The plan will be to bike from Vancouver to Salt Spring Island on Saturday, using the George Massey Tunnel Shuttle, then taking the ferry from Tsawassen to Long Harbour and camping at Ruckle Provincial Park (very bike-friendly and doesn’t require reservations). There’s also a lovely cidery and a brewery on Salt Spring Island, either of which would be perfect for an afternoon stop. Then on Sunday, we can either return the same way, or opt for a shorter cycle with more ferries by going from Fulford Harbor to Schwartz Bay and then to Tsawassen.
No prior bike touring experience is necessary, although you’ll need to be able to bike 60km in a day with overnight gear strapped to your bike. Most of the route will be flat, although the hills on Salt Spring may require a little gumption, roughly equivalent to biking the UBC hill (Alma to Blanca on 8th ave) four times in total. We won’t be trying to go fast, but rather making sure everyone stays roughly together and is comfortable with the pace.
Some required gear:
-
A bike (duh), one with a granny gear is helpful
-
Helmet
-
An extra bike tube
-
Overnight camping gear
Some highly recommended gear:
-
A rack and panniers
-
Or, some other way to strap the gear onto your bike
I don’t plan on going over overnight camping basics, so if you’ve never backpacked or bike toured before, then please get in touch with me ahead of time.
Also, if the weather is any worse than the occasional light drizzle, I’ll probably either cancel the trip or make it a single-day cycle to the Seymour Demonstration Forest.
