Description:

Hey Everyone!!

Apologies for the super short notice post, but my schedule only gives me so much notice!!

Summer is now here, and so is prime time for bike-touring!  If you are an avid lover of bike packing, or have never tried before and want a good introduction, this trip is for you!

Almost all of the biking will be non-technical on paved roads, so basic skills will be all that you need!  The only requirement is that you have a decent level of fitness and like riding your bike!.

Depending on where you live, we will coordinate a meeting spot at the ferry terminal and/or the UBC campus.

The total biking distances are: Day 1 - 65KM, Day 2 - 0-50KM, Day 3 - 65KM.

Day One:

The general plan would be to meet at 7:15 AM at UBC for a departure at 7:30 AM sharp in order to make it to the Massey Tunnel bike shuttle for the 9 AM departure.  From there, we would ride the remainder of the way to the Tsawassen Ferry Terminal for the 10:25 AM sailing time!  The times are somewhat tight, so punctuality for this portion would be important.  If we miss the 10:25 AM sailing, the next one isn't until 4:35 PM!!  For those meeting at the Ferry terminal, just make sure to be there around 10 AM.

Once we arrive at Galliano Island, the real adventure begins!  We will continue biking about 25km further, this time over quite steep terrain, to the opposite side of the island where we plan to camp!  The campsite (Dionisio Point) is only accessible by boat or by bike/hiking, so it is fairly secluded and features stunning ocean and forest scenery only found in the Gulf Islands!

Once we arrive at camp, we will set up our tents, explore the park/relax for the rest of the day.  In the evening, we can gather around the picnic table and enjoy some drinks while playing cards and sharing stories about all of our crazy adventures!

Day Two:

Depending on the energy level of the group, this day could go a few ways...

If everyone is hyped up and energetic, we can do the 50km round-trip bike back the the beginning of the island to do the beautiful hike up Mt. Galliano! (Easy hike, 5.5km, 300M elevation)

If everyone is tired, we can spend more time relaxing at the beach, swimming and exploring the surroundings.  Features of the day could include playing more games and sitting in a hammock!

The secret third option is only available if the group is small enough!  If everyone is on board with the plan, we would pack up camp at a leisurely time and bring all of our gear to the foot of Mt. Galliano.  Then we would hike Galliano with the essentials we need to spend the night to camp at the summit!  This does require respect and discretion, though, because camping is not officially permitted on the summit.  (Only possible in small enough groups)

Day Three:

Pack up camp and return to the ferry terminal for the 4:45 PM Sailing.  (This is the only sailing time leaving Galliano in the evening)

It would also be possible to do the hike on the 3rd day, or even shorten the trip to one night as well!  I'm open to suggestions.

What you will need:

Basics;

  • Sleeping Bag/Pad
  • Toiletries/Meds
  • Tent (We will coordinate sharing tents during the pre-trip)
  • Stove (We will coordinate sharing tents during the pre-trip)
  • Adequate clothing
  • Headlamp
  • Anything else... IDK I'm writing this at 2 am lol

Bike Stuff;

  • Bike (duh)
  • bike rack + panniers
  • tools

I'm hosting the pre-trip meeting on Discord, but if that doesn't work for you, please reach out to the email or phone number in my profile!  Also, seeing as this is such short notice, I encourage you all to text/email me or join the discord ahead of time to ask questions/let me know you're in!

Anyways, that's all I've got! I hope to see you all soon!!
