Beginner Friendly Brian Waddington/Brew Gear List

I highly recommend this presentation [1]. Much of the gear in it is outdated/discontinued though, so maybe don't try to buy those particular products.

If it's not on this list, it will almost certainly weigh you down more than it will help you. Many of the items below are necessary for your safety and the safety of the group, so please prepare carefully. Golden rules:

  • use the gear list
  • no cotton
  • if in doubt, leave it out
  • if you can't wear all your clothes at the same time, you're bringing too much clothes

Personal items:

  • backpack which can carry your skis
  • headlamp + fresh batteries
  • whistle
  • sun glasses or goggles
  • 2L water
  • lunch/snacks X2 + spoon
  • toilet paper
  • gas money (bring change)
  • toothbrush, paste
  • personal medicines, epipen
  • non-cotton clothes
    • long underwear (top and bottom)
    • warm jacket (fleece, down or synthetic)
    • waterproof jacket
    • waterproof pants
    • toque (hat)
    • gloves/mitts
  • avalanche safety (can borrow from club)
    • digital avalanche transceiver (beacon) + fresh batteries (non-rechargeable)
    • shovel
    • probe
  • ski gear (can borrow from club)
    • skis with *touring* bindings
    • skins that fit your skis
    • backcountry ski boots (check with skis and feet beforehand)
    • ski or hiking poles with large plates
    • helmet (highly recommended)
  • sleeping stuff
    • sleeping bag + stuff sack
    • sleeping pad
    • extra socks

Shared: (not everyone needs them, so don't worry if you don't have them)

  • stove, pot, fuel and something to light it
  • dinner (dry food only)
  • breakfast
  • ski repair kit
  • map and compass
  • knife
  • sunscreen

Optional:

  • running/hiking shoes (if we think we're going to be hiking a lot, and you're worried your ski boots will eat your feet)
