Description:
What is G2?
Glacier School 2 (G2) is a trip for people who have already taken G1 (or have similar experience) and want to build on those skills. Some reasons you might want to do G2 are:
- You’ve travelled in rope teams before, but want to gain more confidence in leading them
- You want to learn how to make safe decisions in more complicated terrain
- You want to get better at efficiently using and placing protection
If this sounds about right, then G2 might be for you. Note that those who are committed to instruct G1 the following weekend will get priority to go. When you sign up, make sure you also fill out the questionnaire.
What will we cover?
G2 is a hybrid objective and skills course. We will be practicing skills on the first day, and then going for an objective in the Joffre group on the second. Over the weekend, some skills we might cover are:
- Roped and unroped travel and decision making in complex terrain
- How and when to place protection such as pickets, bollards, and ice screws
- When to belay and how to perform a running belay
- Crevasse rescue (hopefully with a real crevasse)
What are the pre-requisites?
The main pre-req is that you have G1. We will generally not be going over G1 skills, so you should already feel comfortable with them. These include:
- Roping up and travelling on a rope team on a glacier
- Self arrest
- Walking in crampons
- A basic crevasse rescue system
In terms of gear, you’ll generally need the same stuff as for G1. Things like mountaineering boots, crampons, helmets, harnesses, etc… Can all be rented from the clubroom. But you’ll have to source any climbing specific gear like cord, slings, carabiners, pulleys.
Logistics?
Since it is currently only May, we can't really work out all the logistics... But, I already have 3 sites booked at the Upper Joffre Lakes Campground for the weekend of the 16th!
