Unparalleled Skiing at Cypress, April 29

The lifts are closed for the season so it’s time to Ski Cypress. Carla and I go up every year at this time to try and remember how to ski, and to sample the loot that comes out of the snow as it melts. I have been on several unsuccessful trips with Jin and Taniya, so we thought we should invite them to come up with us, as their skiing competence was minimal (Jin had never ever skied). They became pretty good at skinning, and at the top of the green Collins run it began to snow hard, just as we finished lunch.

What with the dwindling visibility in the snow storm combined with the icy ruts left by snowmobiles, the run down wasn’t as easy as we had hoped. Taniya and Jin ended up carrying their skis part way down. Carla got tired of waiting and headed down to the toilets at the parking lot (the hot air hand dryer in the washroom is sweet). Jin made steady progress and occasionally completed a turn, to her great satisfaction. She claimed that the key to her happiness is keeping her expectations low. Taniya never did get her mojo working, probably because of her fairly recent spectacular biking accident.

We had one notable Adventure. Taniya accidentally dropped a ski that she was carrying, and it headed down the ski track at great speed, but fortunately flipped upside down and stopped just before going over a minor cliff. Jin misinterpreted this accident as a useful technique and launched both her skis down the hill. One stopped beside Taniya’s and the other went down a long ways, and we feared that we’d be bringing only one back to the Clubroom and Jin wouldn’t get her deposit back, but fortunately we found it, so lesson learned.

When we got back to the car, rather wet, there was Veenstra. He had just completed several trips up Strachan and back, for exercise. He said that he’ll be taking Fenya up tomorrow. Fenya’s just passing the toddler stage and skis OK. Finally, we ran over an orange traffic cone on the way out of the parking lot and got it stuck under the Jeep for a while.

Didn’t find much loot, just a dime, a glove, and a ski. We kept the dime and the glove.
