Hike Sept 10

I wanted to do something easy. Hollyburn would work. But the Gran Fondo was happening, so second choice was Seymour. Carla drove. There’s lots of things to do on Seymour, so we chose DePencier Bluffs, because I found a ski up there last time we went. We arrived at the parking lot at 9am and it was already nearly full. We faffed for half an hour, then set off on the trail called Mystery Lake. Now if you really want to get to Mystery Lake, I would not recommend that trail unless you like lumpy trails with roots, rocks, etc. Instead you should just walk up the ski run, which is so smooth it’s practically paved. Part way up we stopped to pick a couple of organic blueberries. They were pretty small but tasted OK. We met a guy up there picking entire buckets of blueberries and he tried to explain to us how BC Parks could get along with privately owned Seymour Skiing. While we were talking, a man came down and told us that there was a mother bear and a cub up the trail a ways, so I told him that we don’t use bear spray; we just talk sternly to the bear and it goes away. Eventually mostly due to incompetence we arrived at the top of the first chairlift and decided that we had enough altitude for the day and would not need to go to DePencier Bluffs. There were lots of happy people on the mountain, happy kids, happy dogs. To avoid crowding, we left at 13:00 and went home and had a nap. Total distance covered was 3.6 km, over 3.5 hours with an average speed of 1.04 km/hr, but we did a lot of stopping, eating lunch, resting, talking to strangers, petting dogs, etc.
